Start with the metric, not the app
Search for the best Shopify apps and you'll find lists of 15 to 20 tools, many ranked by affiliate commission. Fine for discovery. Less useful when you're deciding what your store actually needs.
Here's the thing. An app is only worth installing if it moves a number you care about, such as conversion rate, average order value or customer lifetime value. If it doesn't, it's costing you money and page speed.
So we've organised this guide by metric, covering the types of app that help and the ones we rate.
Before you install anything
Find your weak spot first
Pull the last 90 days from Shopify Analytics or GA4 and check conversion rate, AOV and repeat purchase rate.
If visitors convert but baskets are small, start with AOV apps. If customers buy once and never return, start with retention. A bundle app won't fix a conversion problem.
Every app has to earn its place
Each app adds scripts, a monthly fee and another thing that can break when your theme updates. Experienced merchants give consistent advice. Run five apps you use, not twenty sitting idle.
Before installing, decide which metric the app should move and set a review date 60 to 90 days out. If it hasn't paid for itself, remove it.
Check speed and build quality
Look for the Built for Shopify badge, which Shopify awards for performance, design and integration. Test page speed before and after each install, and check removed apps don't leave code in your theme.
Best Shopify apps to increase conversion rate
Conversion apps remove doubt and friction for visitors who already want the product.
Product reviews and UGC
Almost every store needs reviews. Star ratings can also appear in Google results and Shopping ads, which supports your wider eCommerce SEO.
Judge.me is the usual starting point, with unlimited reviews and photo and video requests on its free plan. Loox suits brands built on photo reviews. Larger brands often move to Okendo or Yotpo.
Search and filtering
Shoppers who search usually know what they want, so poor results cost sales. Start with Shopify's free Search and Discovery app. Move to a paid search app when you need typo tolerance or reporting on failed searches.
Trust and urgency
Before adding a trust badge app, check your theme. Most modern themes can show delivery estimates, returns information and payment icons without one.
Countdown timers and sales pop-ups only work for genuine offers. Fake scarcity damages trust and can breach UK consumer protection law.
A/B testing
Intelligems lets you test prices, shipping thresholds and offers, not just layouts. One Reddit merchant named it as one of only two apps they still pay for. You'll need a few hundred orders a month for reliable results.
Best Shopify apps to increase average order value
AOV apps often pay back fastest, because they work on traffic you already have.
Bundle apps
Bundles suit supplements, beauty, food and accessories. If you sell a single hero product, a bundle app probably isn't worth it.
Shopify Bundles is free for fixed bundles. Kaching Bundles handles quantity breaks and includes A/B testing. FoxSell covers mix and match and build-a-box, and is free up to $1,000 of bundle sales a month.
Cart drawer upsells and free shipping bars
A cart drawer showing progress to free shipping, plus one or two relevant add-ons, is one of the most reliable AOV levers. Set the threshold slightly above your current AOV.
Many themes include a cart drawer, so you may only need an app for the upsell logic. Rebuy, UpCart and Wiser are popular choices.
Post-purchase upsells
A one-click offer on the thank you page appears after payment, so it can't cost you the original sale. Most upsell apps include it.
Best Shopify apps to increase customer lifetime value
Winning a customer is the expensive part. LTV apps help you earn more from the ones you already have.
Email and SMS marketing
If you only pay for one app, make it this. Abandoned cart, welcome, post-purchase and win-back flows drive repeat orders in the background.
Klaviyo is the standard for detailed segmentation and revenue reporting by flow. It's also what we use for most clients. Omnisend is a cheaper alternative for smaller lists.
Subscription apps
Subscriptions suit anything reordered on a cycle, such as supplements, coffee, pet food and skincare. Appstle has close to 9,000 reviews and a free plan. Recharge suits larger brands, and Loop and Seal are strong options too.
Prioritise a self-serve portal where customers can skip, swap or pause. A subscriber who can skip a month is far less likely to cancel.
Loyalty and referrals
Loyalty programmes give customers a reason to return to you over a competitor. Smile.io and BON Loyalty both have free plans, and most include referrals. Lead with recognition and early access rather than discounts to protect your margin.
Apps to protect margin and track performance
Revenue growth means little if returns and ad spend eat the profit.
Profit tracking and attribution
Shopify shows revenue, not profit after costs, fees and ad spend. BeProfit, TrueProfit and Bloom pull this into one dashboard.
Brands investing in eCommerce PPC often add Triple Whale or Polar Analytics. Pair either with a post-purchase survey from Fairing or KnoCommerce to capture what tracking pixels miss.
Returns and back in stock
Loop Returns and AfterShip Returns put exchanges and store credit ahead of refunds. For sold out products, Klaviyo's back in stock alerts capture demand without another app.
Should you build your own apps with AI?
Plenty of merchants now build simple tools in Claude or ChatGPT, from stock alerts to blog tools. For internal tasks, it can work well.
For anything touching payments or customer data, be careful. Developers warn that AI-built tools can expose API keys and skip basic validation.
One eight-figure clothing brand started building its own app, then stopped. The founders decided they'd rather make great clothes than become developers.
Our view is simple. Build for internal tasks. Pay for proven apps where revenue or customer data is at stake.
A lean Shopify app stack for every stage
You don't need everything on this list. Here's where we'd start, depending on where your store is today.

Whatever your stage, add one app at a time. Measure its impact before adding the next.
